- Target Sentence
- Itch is an HECT-type E3 ubiquitin ligase that promotes the ubiquitination of Notch. The drosophila ortholog of Itch, suppressor of deltex (SU(DX)), was originally identified as a negative regulator of the Notch pathway. Deltex is a transmembrane ligand for Notch and also has a mammalian homolog, DTX1.The human ortholog of Itch and (SU(DX)) is called AIP4 (atrophin-1-interacting protein) and was first described as a protein that interacts with the product of the gene responsible for dentatorubral and pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA). In mice, Itch was identified as a mutant locus in 18H mice that resulted in a fatal disease characterized by inflammation of the skin which resulted in constant itching and scarring.
